Which Worktop? Granite, Quartz or Laminate…

With the Kitchen Industry growing and changing literally by the day, it seems the variety of worktops available is growing at an amazing pace too.

Granite, Corian, Silestone, Quartz, Laminates… The list goes on.

Lots of out clients don’t actually know the difference between Granite and Quartz or what Silestone is.

Here’s a bit of info for you…

Granite is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. Granites usually have a medium- to coarse-grained texture. Occasionally some individual crystals (phenocrysts) are larger than the groundmass, in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is sometimes known as a porphyry. Granites can be pink to gray in color, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy.

Corian® is the original solid surface material. Created to last a lifetime it is a unique blend of minerals and acrylic which creates a stone-hard surface that can be shaped to meet any design or dimension. The inherent resilience of Corian® comes from the fine qualities of minerals and acrylics.  Feature: Its non-porous surface prevents dirt and stains from penetrating the material. Benefit: Marks and stains stay on the surface and can easily be removed with a Scotchbrite® pad and household cleaner.

Silestone® is naturally beautiful, durable quartz. Silestone is the world’s leading natural quartz surface – a superior stone for myriad interior surfacing applications because of its ideal combination of beauty and practicality.

Quartz is one of the hardest, most abundant minerals found in nature – only diamond, sapphire and topaz are harder. Besides beauty, the quartz in Silestone gives it extreme strength, making Silestone highly scratch-resistant.

Laminate worktops are a counter top made specific for  use as a kitchen worktop. They are made from high-density chipboard; plywood or MDF, coated in a plastic laminate. they are probably the most popular worktops used in kitchens in the UK.
